Lucia Guzman, Candidate for State Senator, Senate District 34

Lucía Guzmán, Candidate for State Senate, SD34

Greetings!

My name is Lucía Guzmán. I consider it a privilege and an honor to run for the Colorado State Senate — and I hope to have the opportunity to serve the interests of my District 34 neighbors in 2010.

I am currently the executive director for the City of Denver’s Agency for Human Rights and Community Relations. I was appointed to this position by Mayor Hickenlooper in 2003, and it’s my role to take the lead in addressing local issues promoting equal opportunity and protection of the rights of all people.

When I was on the Denver Public Schools Board of Education (I was elected for two consecutive terms), I was a relentless voice for parent and community choices in education. This resulted in the establishment of:

• Academia Ana Maria Sandoval, the district’s only dual language Montessori program
• Brown International Academy, the district’s only elementary school with an international baccalaureate program
• Lake International School, a middle school with an international education program
• Denver Center for International Studies, a school for grades 6-12 school with an international focus
• Centennial K-8 School, the first K-8 school in northwest Denver

Even though my voice was not always the most popular in advocating for these choices, I am very proud of the tremendous mark of success these schools have made in meeting the needs of Denver’s children.

I have had many conversations with Coloradans about what’s important to them. My experiences have taught me that all people, no matter what their differences in background might be, share a common desire for equal access to opportunities and a good quality of life.

I am running for the Senate because I, too, share this vision. If elected, I will put my experience to work. I will continue to take a stand on issues that matter. A few of the issues I would address to improve quality of life in our state include:

• Economy: Working hard to meet the budgetary needs of important programs so that equally critical needs are met and opportunities are generated for all Coloradans.

• Education: Improving the financial and strategic support given to higher education and K-12 in Colorado.

• Aging: For people of all ages, making available the resources needed to lead healthy lives, be financially stable, and have access to quality and affordable health care and housing.

What do you think? I’d love to hear from you and know your thoughts about what will make Colorado an even better state. Here’s how you can reach me:
