Candidate for State Representative, HD3: Daniel Kagan
CANDIDACY
- Kagan is a candidate for the seat in the Colorado House of Representatives (House District 3), which is to become vacant on March 27th, 2009, due to the resignation of incumbent Representative Anne McGihon.
- Kagan is the only candidate who had publicly declared and filed papers for the 2010 race for House District 3, prior to the McGihon resignation announcement.
CITIZENSHIP
- Born (1953) and raised in England.
- Immigrated to the U.S. in 1975, aged 22.
- American citizen since 1984.
- Now 56 years old.
EDUCATION
- Undergraduate degree in Public Affairs from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (Phi Beta Kappa), 1984.
- Law degree from Yale Law School, New Haven, Connecticut, 1987.
- In the 1970’s, Kagan joined the Teamsters and loaded freight onto trucks in Dallas, Texas.
- Became flight instructor, giving retiring military pilots transition training onto civilian jets under the GI Bill and later providing basic flight training to midshipmen at the US Naval Academy, operating out of Fort Meade, Maryland.
- On graduation from Yale Law School in 1987, Kagan spent two years at the D.C. law firm, Arnold & Porter, then set up private practice with his wife, Faye, also a lawyer. Together, they practiced criminal defense of indigents and represented civil plaintiffs in actions against insurance companies and other large corporations.
WORK HIGHLIGHTS
- Took up temporary residence in northern England in 1995, to rescue family firm, a former textile manufacturing operation, whose assets had dwindled, primarily, to completely derelict Victorian mills in the vandal-plagued centers of small industrial towns. The urban regeneration of these sites was a complex economic and political task, which took more than ten years.
FAMILY
- Married to Faye for 19 years, with three children, aged 10, 15 and 17, all of whom attend local public schools.
- Suicide prevention counselling. The Samaritans, 1969 – 1971.
- Mentor to fatherless boys. Big Brothers of America, 1975 – 1979.
UNPAID NON-POLITICAL WORK
- Mock Trial Coach, Cherry Creek High School, 2008.
- Radio reporter for the Democratic News Service (an arm of the Democratic National Committee), covering committee hearings on Capitol Hill, 1981 – 1983.
- Pro Bono lawyer for the ACLU, representing protesters outside the Readan White House, 1988.
- Legislative Director of the District of Columbia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, elected by peers to advocate in favor of a fairer criminal justice system in the nation’s capital, 1988 – 1989.
- Legal counsel, strategist and spokesman for the National Clinton Delegation to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, successfully advocating unification of the Democratic Party by putting Clinton’s name on Denver nominating election ballot.
- Volunteer in the legislative office of Representative Anne McGihon, 2009.lawyer for the ACLU, representing protesters outside the Reagan White House, 1988.
