Candidate for State Representative, HD3: George Brown

Hello everyone!
I hope you are having a great day. My name is George B. Brown, precinct 331 captain, and candidate for the House seat being vacated by Rep. McGihon. As curriculum director for a high school leadership development program, I am very active in the issues and processes related to our community and effectively representing House District 3.
I help teach students along the Front Range the knowledge, skills, and behavior to have their voices heard in their community and to become agents of positive social change. I currently work on a variety of projects with many legislators, which includes hands-on issues research and citizen lobbying activities with students at the Capitol, and would truly be able to hit the ground running as your representative.
With a young boy about to enter kindergarten at Slavens Elementary, and an even younger daughter, I am passionate about working to hard to make District 3, and our state, an even better place to live and grow. Everyday I live and teach the concepts of leadership, civic engagement, and service and would be honored to continue to cultivate those ideals representing District 3 within our General Assembly.
I hope to meet each of you over the next week and will appreciate your vote on March 26.
Thank you,
George B. Brown

Dear HD 3 Vacancy Committee Member:
After my introductory email sent on Tuesday, I want to follow-up with specifics regarding my stance on a few of the issues important to our community and tell you more myself.
First and foremost, I want to work with YOU. As a strong consensus builder among diverse groups, I have formal training and practical experience to synthesize information, understand issues, and work toward common interests and solutions. I want to collaborate with those who have a stake in our community and who want to make it better. I welcome the opportunity to learn from you and to work together to craft strong public policy and legislation for the good of District 3 and the state of Colorado.
In addition, you can count on me to be a strong advocate for:
- Improving the way we educate our children and young people. K-12 education currently comprises 42% of our state general fund, but we still have students who are not gaining the knowledge and skills to compete in the global marketplace. Colorado graduates only 75% of its students, and that drops to 50% for DPS. We must find new ways to reach our kids, train and retain effective teachers, and make the curriculum relevant to the real world.
- I have had the great opportunity to live and work around the world, and with a master’s degree in international relations from DU’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies, and having developed and implemented a successful yearlong global literacy program for high school seniors, I am well aware of what is needed to better connect our community with the world. To help keep me connected to the world, I also volunteer frequently at an apartment complex in northeast Denver that houses about 250 refugees from around the planet who are making their new home in Denver.
- Continued efforts toward developing effective plans to address land use and affordable housing. I am a solid supporter of Denver’s Road Home and Mayor Hickenlooper’s efforts to address chronic homelessness and move people off the streets. With about 60% of our homeless population comprising families, and $70 million spent on the homeless each year, this is an issue of humanity, dignity, and economics.
- Securing affordable health care for everyone, including support for child immunizations and substance abuse treatment. About 80% of the inmates in the Colorado Dept. of Corrections need substance abuse treatment. It is estimated that the cost burden to Colorado for substance abuse is about $850 million per year. With more effective education and awareness programs, and treatment both in and out of correctional facilities we can ease the crowding in our prisons and improve the overall health of our citizens and communities.
- Creating a healthy environment and smart sustainable development models to address water conservation and renewable energy. Like most Coloradoans, I am a big fan of the outdoors and want to maintain our incredible natural wonders.
In addition, I have attached a piece that I wrote for the Fall 2008 issue of the Jared Polis Foundation’s Education Report. It describes how we should integrate civic engagement practices with service, and gives another window into what I will endeavor to build within our community... Please feel free to read it at your leisure.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to meeting you and would deeply appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
George B. Brown
